Are you new to Edmonton? Need some holiday inspiration? We’ve got you covered. Here are 10 things to do this Christmas Eve – with your family, a friend, or on your own. Have fun and happy holidays!
#10 Watch a Movie
Not just any movie, either. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is on track to being the highest grossest movie of all time. Or, if science fiction isn’t your thing Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell have a hilarious holiday-themed flick called A Bad Moms Christmas out as well.
#9 The Magic of Lights
Support Santas Anonymous and take in some festive lights at the Castrol Raceway with the Magic of Lights. You can drive at your own pace and enjoy the lights from the comfort of your vehicle. Put on some Christmas music, sit back and relax.
Every year the Edmonton Valley Zoo hosts Zoominesence – A Festival of Light. Enjoy artistic light installations, hot chocolate, skating, fire dancers, and animals! This can easily be an event for the whole family or just yourself.
#7 Order Chinese Food
Want to try something unconventional? Order Chinese food and watch Die Hard. Nothing says Christmas time like Bruce Willis and a plate full of chicken fried rice. There are a number of places across the city open late, including the Golden Rice Bowl on Gateway.
#6 Last Minute Shopping
Get some last minute shopping done. Be warned, though. Most malls close early due to the holidays. West Edmonton Mall and Kingsway Mall are both open until 5 p.m., Southgate is open until 4 p.m. and City Centre is open until 6 p.m.
#5 Candy Cane Lane
If you were born-and-raised in Edmonton, you are probably familiar with Candy Cane Lane. If not, this is a good time to check it out. The lane lights up each evening at dusk between 148th Street and 92nd Avenue. You can walk alone or book a sleigh ride – and remember to bring a donation for the Food Bank.
#4 Glow in the Dark Axe Throwing
Maybe you have thrown an ax before, maybe you haven’t. Either way, chances are you’ve never thrown one that glows in the dark. This Christmas Jack Axe – 9785 45 Ave – is offering a different twist on the traditional game.
#3 Ski with Santa
Snow Valley is hosting a Santa on the Hill Event – ski with the big man in red from 10:45 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
#2 Pamper Yourself
If, for whatever reason, you can’t spend time with loved ones this season, why not give yourself some extra love instead? Run a bath, make a pedicure appointment and indulge in all your favourite treats!
#1 Get Outside
Whether it’s walking one of the many public trails around the River Valley or taking in the neighborhood lights, getting outside is good for the soul. Fill a thermos full of hot chocolate, put some music on your phone and go for a stroll. Just remember to dress warm!
