Some of you students might be graduating this summer, and you might also be thinking about your first vehicle purchase! Or maybe your parents’ 1999 Camry just isn’t holding up like it once did. Perhaps you’re a parent trying to encourage your recent grad to move the heck out–in any case, we have some suggestions for the best inexpensive vehicles for students!
Leasing and financing are available for each of these vehicles, and we encourage you to come down to Mayfield Toyota to test drive them for yourself! A test drive and some solid advice is always free.
A Go-to for Students
Makes sense for this to be at the top of the list. The Toyota Corolla has a history of being THE best-selling nameplate in vehicle history. Inexpensive, fuel-efficient, and reliable, The Corolla is the perfect go-to sedan for first buyers. Used Corollas start at only $15,000 for NEWER models, like the 2013 Toyota Corolla. Older models have some of the best value today on the road.
As a consistent Top Safety Pick by the IIHS and one of the most dependable vehicles on the road, according to third-party research, the Toyota Corolla is a no-brainer for parents looking to help their kids buy a new vehicle. It’s also one of the most fun vehicles to drive, and we promise that after a test drive in a Corolla, there will be no objections.
For Smart Students and Fun-Lovers
Perhaps an even better entry-level choice than the Corolla, the Toyota Yaris is such a wonderful city vehicle. It’s another smart choice, and you can get a 2009 Toyota Yaris starting at just $9,000.
It was originally designed to excel on the tight streetways of France and Germany, so it’s all about maneuverability and efficiency. Makes sense, right? Nine standard airbags and traction and stability control make this one of the safer vehicles on the road too. But it’s not all about sensibility and practicality; this is another fun vehicle to drive and another must-test-drive.
Standard features on newer models include the Entune digital interface with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, HD radio, and Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, so you and your friends will have a ton of fun playing with all your tech in the Yaris.
The Toyota Yaris is very fuel-efficient too, making it a great long-term investment considering how little you’ll have to go back to the gas pump. A new Yaris also has a great ownership perk you won’t find anywhere else: 2 years/25,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance–a rarity for a non-luxury car.
Even Just the Look of it
Get a used 2010+ Scion tC starting at around $10,000. Financing and leasing are available too.
A two-door coupe might not seem like the ultimate party vehicle for college students, but the Scion tC is more spacious than you’d think with a versatile hatchback cargo area. The back seating has a lot of legroom and it even reclines for when your friends just want to chill.
With the older tC’s, it’s not just the lower price point that you get, it’s also that there aren’t a ton of differences between the different models of the same year; transmission and colour are the only decisions you’ll have to make. If a standard audio jack is a must-have, go for an ’08+.
A Sensible Toyota Prius
It’s not nearly expensive as you’d think if you buy used! 2006-2009 models are priced from $7,000-$15,000, and that’s a big investment with hybrid technology.
46 mpg combined (city and highway, combined). One-and-a-half times the fuel efficiency of a Toyota Corolla gives the Prius some major greed cred. The Toyota Prius has a spacious hatchback cabin for all your friends or for all your stuff, should you consider moving out into a dorm or a new apartment.
The Toyota Prius also has an outstanding reputation for reliability, and it’s so easy to charge, especially nowadays with charging stations all throughout the city. A replacement battery might be a bit costly, but the factory batteries come with an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty, so you can rest assured you’ll get a lot of mileage out of your Prius. Newer Prius models have even better fuel economy and additional features you might enjoy having.
